Translated Anna Interview From French Site – Including Video

How do you think Olivia Dunham has evolved since season one?
Anna Torv ) I think she has changed a lot. It will be interesting to see its evolution from the end of Season 3 to Season 4. I think people forget that when we met Olivia, she was a happy woman and an FBI agent working, and totally in love with the fullness of his life. All Events “Fringe” and his memories of the past came and she became increasingly withdrawn. I hope that by the end of the series, it will return to what I think is his essence.

I think she’s more feminine this season, more open to love and friendship …
AT) You think so? It’s very interesting … She had so much to put on the defensive this season … Maybe she became more feminine as it was allowed to fall in love with Peter.

“I think it’s a sci-fi show but once you go beyond the genre, you are immersed in a profound reality and that’s what our writers do as well.”

Do you think Walter would have told the truth about Peter to Olivia if she had not the ability to see the real alternative?
AT) Yes. It is a question that John Noble should answer but I think so. The core of Walter is that he feels responsible for everything that happens, the secrets he kept. I think his aim is to forgive and be forgiven by everyone around him.

Walter experimented on Olivia when she was young. Will she forgive him one day?
AT) I think she slowly began to do so. It’s hard to tell you more because it is a long process. I think she did not fully understand why he did all that but she starts to know that there was no malice in his actions.

What are the main challenges to play two versions of the same character?
AT) If I had to play a character totally different, I would have done differently and with other elements. Olivia both are exactly the same person: they have the same job, they rub the same people. You have to think to understand the same place but in different ways. I always thought that our Olivia is just honest, she wants to be the most protective, the best agent. She wears it on his shoulders. The alternative Olivia just wants to win, it darkens, she enjoys the competition, she loves to fight. You can understand why they do the same work and what are the small differences between them.

From your perspective, what makes the Fringe series so special?
AT) I think it’s a sci-fi show but once you go beyond the genre, you are immersed in a profound reality and that’s what our writers do as well. They ensure that the characters have and their relations. Most of the series is based on the relationship between a father and son. You believe, and once it’s approved, you can go even further. I believe that good science fiction story gets there. This is what makes Fringe so special.

Several recent episodes of the series are marked by the return of William Bell (Leonard Nimoy). Can you tell me something about your voice work, where Belly is in the body of Olivia Duhnam?
AT) When I read the script, I thought I die! I called John Noble as it is a great actor and a very generous man and said, “come and have coffee with me!” John and I both have a “dialect coach” because we are Australians and this wonderful woman helps us to underestimate our focus. I told him so much talk. Then I just took my breath and I jumped … It was scary but all you can do is try!

Blair Brown is directing an episode of Fringe for season 4. You feel ready to assume the post of director?
AT) Not yet. I do not even have the potential to lead others. I think a good director knows exactly what he wants. My communication skills are limited to that of an actor. I have lived too long with this unique direction. I understand the language of a film but the way I look at it is too close to the pure vision of an actor. My brain is currently not enough connected to the entire network … We have many different directors. It is interesting to see how they all behave. Some are directors of actors, some great technicians. Those who manage to find the balance between the two sides are the best.

What was your biggest challenge since the beginning of the series?
AT) When you work such long hours on a plateau, we must stay focused. While the episodes are different, you always feel like a crime scene. We must continue with that feeling. Whenever there is a sequence of emotional or a new character, it becomes fun. That’s what makes you live for this trade.

You talk about “long hours” … What looks like a typical day of shooting on Fringe?
AT) I have no other projects Fringe so I am always very happy to reach the plateau. Sometimes you feel a bit tense with everyone. You look at your watch and you say it’s four in the morning and there are still two hours of shooting … (Laughs). It’s like a muscle to do work. During the first season, I used to go home after a long day and it took me two hours to learn my lines. Today, I put twenty minutes. It’s like exercise. When you make a habit to do something, it becomes more enjoyable as easy. You allow yourself to think of something else. I look forward to season 4.

Anna Torv has such great insight in the characters, the process and herself as well it seems.
With her comment considering directing, I have the feeling she does a lot of close watching on set, and I can see her directing in the future.
PS.I read the original the translation is near perfect.

I think she said somewhere, she likes to hang around on the set even if she doesn’t have any scenes. I did theater for a few years and that’s what I used to do. That’s the fun part.
Sounds like she’s not giving herself enough credit, her work is excellent and I believe a line from The Last Sam Weiss fits for Anna as well: “You have no idea how extraordinary you are. If you would embrace that, there is no end to what you can do.”
I can’t wait for Sep 23rd.
